The hematocrit is measured by taking a blood sample through an automated machine that makes several other measurements of the blood at the same time. The hematocrit can also be determined using a centrifuge. When a tube of blood is centrifuged, the red blood cells will be found packed into the bottom of the tube and the proportion of red cells to the total blood volume can then be measured is the proportion, by volume, of the blood that consists of red blood cells. The hematocrit is expressed as in terms of percentage. The normal ranges for hematocrit is based on the age after adolescence and the gender of the individual.
