Kidneys are vital organs which form the part of the human renal system and responsible for blood filtration. The human body comprises a pair of kidneys, each of which are present on the left and right side of the body. They are bean-like structures in shape and their size is around 10 – 12 cm. Primary function of kidneys includes the removal of toxic substances and wastes from the blood, and production of urine. They are responsible for maintaining salt and electrolyte balance in the body. All these functions are carried by filtering units of the kidney. In terms of anatomy, the filtering units present in the kidney are known as nephrons. The nephrons consist of renal corpuscle and renal tubule. The renal corpuscle is made up of two subunits: the glomeruli and the bowman's capsule. Together they are responsible for blood filtering. Renal tubules consist of three subunits: proximal convoluted tubule, Henle’s loop, and distal convoluted tubule. This part of nephron is responsible for water reabsorption and maintenance of salt-electrolyte balance.
