What are the processes involved in the regulation of blood glucose levels?
Blood sugar regulation is the process by which the levels of blood sugar is maintained in the body within an optimal range. This process by which the blood glucose levels are tightly regulated in the body is also referred to as glucose homeostasis. There are mainly two hormones which help in the regulation of blood glucose levels: insulin and glucagon.
Regulation of blood glucose levels occurs by negative feedback mechanism in which the pancreatic islets play a significant role. A drop in the levels of blood glucose in response to some strenous activity causes the alpha cells of pancreas to release glucagon. This hormone helps the islet cells to convert the stored glycogen in our body to glucose. This process of conversion is known as glycogenolysis. Thus, the glucose so formed is released into the bloodstream, thereby increasing the levels of glucose in the body.
