Expert Solution
Step 1 Important elements of a good appraisal system

A performance evaluation is a process that involves reviewing an employee's performance, which is usually performed regularly. It aims to evaluate the employee's skills, performance, and overall contribution to the company.

Performance appraisal paves the way for promotion, removal and challenging a employee more.

Some important elements of a good appraisal system.

1. A significantly transparent appraisal system

Make the performance evaluation process as transparent as possible. Having employees familiar with it will help minimize anxiety and make it more effective. Uncertainty can create a toxic environment, so it is important to set clear expectations and avoid making mistakes.

2. Equal application of policies

In no case there should be different standards for evaluating employees. Different policies would clearly showcase a mere depiction of appraisal system.

3. Appraisal policies should be clearly stated.

Don’t surprise your employees with bad news in a performance evaluation.

The appraisal should not be new to the employee. It should not be used to address past issues and should not include any feedback that was raised during the year. Having a clear understanding of the employee's performance helps minimize the fear of unknown. It should be made very clear to the employees that they will be evaluated time and again in different ways.

4. Do not use appraisal as a tool of criticism

The employee should be asked how they feel about their performance in order to create plans for positive change. It should not be treated as a "day of reckoning" or a formal criticism session. Critical evaluation of employees every time would only result in demotivated employees.

5. Keep feedback open

Appraisal doesn't works one way, it is a two way process therefore the employees should always be allowed to give their feedback and the managers should keep their door open for them.

An effective performance appraisal involves asking for both the employee's own and the organization's performance.

6. A proper method of appraisal should be implemented

An effective performance appraisal involves asking for both the employee's own and the organization's performance.

Decisions for appraisal should always be made keeping in mind all the factors and without personal bias.
