Question

What are the four main types of mass wasting and what factors influence each?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Mass wasting is the removal of material on large scale from the elevated area, and material slides down with help of gravitational force.

Step 2

Four types of Mass wasting are as follows :

  • Landslides- It mainly occurs in the mountainous region, where due to heavy rainfall the land loses its grip and slides downwards.
  • Mudflow- It occurs during floods in the hilly regions where the mud flowed down to the foothills due to the gravitational and high velocity of the water.
  • Rotational slip- it is the rotational movement of material in a concave shape due to the detachment of the loose material from the parent rock.  it can occur where the climate is humid, or the weathering is prominent.
  •  Rockfall- It occurs mainly due to the weathering of rocks, one part of rock became detached and falls down due to gravity. This type of phenomenon can be found in arid regions.
