The individual liberties, freedoms, consent of the governed, and equality before the law are the pillars of liberalism, a political and ethical worldview. Depending on how they interpret these ideas, liberals hold a wide range of opinions, but in general, they support private property, market economies, individual rights (such as civil and human rights), liberal democracy, secularism, the rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech and the press, and freedom of religion.
Liberalism became a distinct movement and was accepted by Western philosophers and economists throughout the Age of Enlightenment. The hereditary privilege, state religion, absolute monarchy, the monarchs' divine right, and conventional conservatism standards were to be replaced by representative democracy and the rule of law.
