What are the consequences of our current sentencing structure for society?
The consequences of our current sentencing structure for society is affected in two stages of the offenders life such the period of confinement and the reentry into society.
It is often seen that sentencing and prison meant often leads to reduced social status as one return to the society .The inmate suffers from economic, social , emotional and psychological problems. The main effects of imprisonment often seen are self condemnation, guilt, and loneliness, resulting in losses of right perspective in life and losing of self confidence.
The family members are also humiliated and rejected of the inmates. Imprisonment also multiplies their preexisting financial problems. Inmates receive vocational training at the time of imprisonments so that they can become self independent , after the release they often fail to get jobs and work which make their condition even the worse which leads to former inmates more highly vulnerable to future criminal involvement.
