A pure compound generally melts over a range of temperature. If the melting point of the sample is coming out to be lower than the literature value, there are the high chances of the sample being impure.
Step 2
Impurities which are soluble with the sample lowers the melting point of the sample.This is because they disrupt the structure of the solid and the repeating forces of interaction present within it. Due to this lesser amount of energy is now required to break the intermolecular forces present within the solid and to melt it, hence its melting point decreases.
