We have discussed how places are socially constructed using a variety of examples across space and time and at multiple scales (e.g., urban spaces such as shopping malls, neighbourhoods, suburbs, homes; nations, national monuments, borders; regions, cultural landscapes; economic sectors/activities; natural resources, agriculture, the environment, etc.). Select a ‘place’ of your choosing and explain how it is socially constructed. First, provide a brief description of your selected place – make sure to include the nature or type of place/space, its location, its scale, the social groups or people that use it, the types of activities/social relations/dynamics that take place in it, etc

Geography

We have discussed how places are socially constructed using a variety of examples across space and time and at multiple scales (e.g., urban spaces such as shopping malls, neighbourhoods, suburbs, homes; nations, national monuments, borders; regions, cultural landscapes; economic sectors/activities; natural resources, agriculture, the environment, etc.). Select a ‘place’ of your choosing and explain how it is socially constructed. First, provide a brief description of your selected place – make sure to include the nature or type of place/space, its location, its scale, the social groups or people that use it, the types of activities/social relations/dynamics that take place in it, etc. (hint: local scale is most amenable to do this exercise – e.g., a park, neighbourhood, university campus, workplace or office, school, street, resort, etc.). Next, explain what and how particular cultural and social norms are being imposed and shape the experiences and/or practices of specific groups within it (e.g., in terms of class, gender, age, ethnicity/race, sexuality, religion, etc.).

Answer should be about 2 pages long (double spaced) and approximately 500-700 words. Develop 2-4 strong points and these should be illustrated with concrete examples when appropriate. Take the time to plan your answer, starting with an outline of the main ideas you wish to discuss, and then develop them in more detail. Make sure your answer is clearly structured and edited (introduction, body with several paragraphs, conclusion). You are encouraged to use concrete & illustrative examples.
