Problem 6.4
If the annual declination has an average value of 6’ 9” W, what is the magnetic bearing
of the line observed in Problem 6.4 in 2020? Also, determine the magnetic azimuth
from south. Neglect the effect of the local attraction.

ANSWER KEY:
θb Magnetic =N 69 ̊ 17’ 36” E
θa Magnetic =S 249 ̊ 17’ 36”

Sample Problem 6.4
A property line surveyed in 1975 by Engr. Carasco. The line was recorded with a
magnetic bearing of S 57° 28' 15" W. The magnetic declination at the time of survey
was 2° 43' E. Determine the true bearing and the azimuth of the property line (from
North).
Solution:
MN
2° 43'
Property Line
Figure 6.16 Illustration of Sample Problem 6.4
The easiest way in dealing with angles is to illustrate the situation. After the illustration,
the bearing and azimuth are determine mathematically based on the Figure.
The magnetic declination is given with the magnitude of 2° 43' E. This means that the
magnetic pole is inclined 2° 43' to the East of the true North.
For the true bearing:
The bearing of a line can be measure from either North or South Pole as long as its
value is in between 0 to 90 degrees. In this problem, we will measure the bearing from
South to meet the bearings criterion.
Ob True = 57° 28'15" + 2° 43'
Өъ Тrие — S 60° 11'15" W
For the azimuth:
The azimuth should be measure from North as stated in the problem.
a True = 180° + 60° 11'15"
Oa True = N 240° 11'15"
The true bearing of the property line is S 60° 11'15" W and its true azimuth with respect
to North is 240° 11'15".
