Value stream mapping (VSM) is a relatively large undertaking. It takes a process, its stakeholders, fresh eyes, and literally maps it out (tip to tail). A real-life example in which I have participated is the flow of a patient from the Emergency department to hospital floors. This was an almost week long project where every part of the project was reviewed - Gemba was employed, 5S looked at, all the concepts for which you have been exposed. At the end, 100's of non-value added steps were identified and removed. In you career, should the opportunity come available, I would encourage you to take advantage and participate. VSMs take days; however, use this week to briefly interview a healthcare leader and get their thoughts on: 1) a VSM in which they have been involved; 2) their perspective as being part of it; and 3) how it impacted their operations.
