Photoelectron spectroscopy is used to measure the kinetic energy provided to the electrons ejected from the atom on the bombardment by the X-ray photons. While doing so electrons overcome the binding energy and are directed towards the detector to record the number of electrons. The innermost electrons have more binding energy and the outermost or valence shell have the least binding energy associated with it.
