Question

Scientists are synthesizing new elements all the time.  In theory, elements with atomic numbers well beyond those of the current periodic table are possible.  We can apply the principles of quantum mechanics to predict the electron configurations of yet to be synthesized elements.

Assuming perfect Aufbau filling, how many electrons would be present in the highest energy subshell of theoretical element 125?

Number of electrons in highest energy subshell:

Expert Solution
Introduction:

Aufbau is a German word meaning Building up. Aufbau principle states that lowest energy orbitals filled up before higher energy orbitals are filled. And also Aufbau rule states that if any orbital has lower n+l value its energy is the lowest. Also if any two orbitals have same n+l values, the orbital with lower n value will have lower energy where n and l are the principal quantum number and azimuthal quantum number respectively.
