The nervous system which comprises of the somatic and autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system is responsible for controlling voluntary skeletal muscles of the body. The autonomic nervous system is further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic division which controls the action of visceral organs, glands, smooth muscles and blood vessels. The somatic nervous system consists of motor nerves that release acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction and causes contraction of skeletal muscles. The parasympathetic division uses acetylcholine as neurotransmitter to regulate the activity of effector organs. The sympathetic division uses adrenaline and noradrenaline as neurotransmitters to exert their effects on effector organ. The preganglionic fibres of sympathetic division are cholinergic and use acetylcholine as neurotransmitter while postganglionic fibres are adrenergic and release adrenaline and noradrenaline to excite or inhibit the activity of effector organ.
