Question

Find an interesting instance where two variables are strongly correlated, but share no causal link.  Explain the situation, describe the variables, and explain why it doesn't make sense for the data to be correlated.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Correlation is a statistical technique that tells us how strongly the pair of variables are linearly related and change together. It does not tell us why and how behind the relationship but it just says the relationship exists.

by observing some random examples like:

In some cases, there are some hidden factors that are related on some level. Like in our example of ice cream sales and homicide rates, the weather is the hidden factor that is causing both things. Weather is actually causing the rise in ice cream sales and homicides. As in summer people usually go out, enjoy the nice sunny days and chill themselves with ice creams. So when it’s sunny, a wide range of people are outside and there is a wider selection of victims for predators.
