At 17, Emily entered college but returned home before the year was over because of frequent illness and homesickness. At home, she took on familial responsibilities. She and her sister, devoted to their aging parents, split the household chores.

Emily was often shy around strangers, although her family and friends admired her intelligence and quick wit.

In early adulthood, Emily began to suffer from agoraphobia—the fear of crowded places. She dreaded leaving her home. By the age of 23, Emily had limited herself to taking only short trips to visit relatives. Before long, Emily wandered no farther than her brother's house next door. She wrote letters to her friends, but she never received visitors. Her companions were her books, her sister, her dog, and her writing journals.
