One of the earliest works on intelligence was published by Sir Francis Galton in the late 1800s. He wrote about the hereditary nature of intelligence and proposed that it can be assessed by evaluating an individual’s performance on sensorimotor tasks.

Galton’s work on intelligence and measurement of mental processes attracted Alfred Binet, following which he gave up his career as a lawyer and eventually developed his intelligence test, which continues to serve as the setting stage for the development of several other modern IQ tests.
