To determine the freezing point:
o Plot the cooling curve in Excel (temperature on the y-axis vs. time on the x-axis) as
shown in the example in figure 3. Plot the data as two series, one where the
temperature is changing by more than 0.5 °C per 30 second reading and a second
where the temperature is changing by less than 0.5 °C per 30 second reading. Fit each
series to a best fit line and display the equations on the chart.

O Determine the melting point. Tm. for the pure stearic acid sample using the two
trendline equations. Find the point where the two lines intersect by setting the two
equations equal to one another and solving for "x". Take that "x" and use either
equation to determine the temperature at which the equations are equal. The
temperature at the intersection of the two lines is the freezing point.
Compare your calculated freezing point to the actual melting point by determining the
percent error.
This unit will use the concepts of Mass and Volume from Week 1.
