To assist in picturing and understanding underground conditions existing at a site, it has become common to assemble the borings, CPT, and test pit information to develop a subsurface cross section. Why is it important to assemble the boring and how does it help?

Geo-technical investigation or soil exploration: It includes investigations and data includes sub-soil conditions, position of ground water and fluctuations. Geo technical investigations have become a vital part of every construction to ensure safety of human beings and materials. It includes a detailed investigation of the soil to determine the soil strength, its composition, water content, and other important soil characteristics.
Assemblance of CPT, Test pit and borings:
CPT (Cone penetration Test) is used to determine geotechnical properties of soil such as relative density of soil and soil behavior, both of which calculated from the cone penetration test cone tip resistance and sleeve friction.
Test pit or trial pit is a type of intrusive soil investigation which is used to determine the condition of the ground before the beginning of the construction work. Test pits are commonly used to investigate the conditions of shallow ground to understand the condition of soil profile under the ground at shallow depth. The main disadvantage of trial pit is it is only suitable for shallow depths. For deep depths, borings are done.
