Concept explainers
Compton effect
The incoming photons' energy must be in the range of an X-ray frequency to generate the Compton effect. The electron does not lose enough energy that reduces the wavelength of scattered photons towards the visible spectrum. As a result, with visible lights, the Compton effect is missing.
Recoil Velocity
The amount of backward thrust or force experienced by a person when he/she shoots a gun in the forward direction is called recoil velocity. This phenomenon always follows the law of conservation of linear momentum.
Question
![Through thick & thin. A laser impinges on a thin film (n = 2) sandwiched by two materials (n₁ <nf < n₂). The top material (₁) is relatively thick. The
laser can take on wavelength o values from 500 [nm] to 2000 [nm]. Within this range, constructive interference occurs only for two wavelength values,
500 [nm] and another wavelength. The respective orders of the wavelengths do not differ by more than one. How thick is the thin film? [Hint: First determine the
constraints on the order corresponding to Xo = 500 [nm].]
