As the fluid flows through the pipes it experiences loss of energy along the length of the pipe. This loss of energy/head is due to number of reasons. The major cause of head loss is due to friction in the pipe. Besides there are other causes of head loss like pipe fittings but these usually doesn't account for significant loss of head in the pipe flow.
