When trying to understand issues in the world, it
can be hard to stay objective in your judgement.
Viewing the social world with a sociological
imagination helps you to shed your biases and
see things from a different perspective. We all|
have implicit biases based on our own lives and
experiences, so our attempts at understanding
social life from an individual perspective may be
flawed if we don't account for these biases. Using
a sociological imagination allows us to see the
bigger picture and account for greater forces at
work. Many issues that we see as being personal
issues, such as homelessness, drug abuse,
unemployment, etc., actually have larger societal
factors influencing them. Only by looking at these
issues with a sociological imagination allows us to
identify and address them and other problems in
our social world.
