The process of muscle contraction involves which ion? a. Na+ b. K+ с. Са2+ d. Cl-
There are four important types of muscle contractions. They are namely:
Isotonic contractions: The tension maintained in an isotonic contraction is constant as the muscle length changes. There are two types of isotonic muscle contractions namely the concentric and eccentric contractions.
Concentric contractions: In this type of contraction, there is shortening of the muscle when it generates force. For example - During lifting weights, the biceps undergo concentric contraction which causes the arm to bend at the elbow thereby lifting the weight towards the shoulder.
Eccentric contraction: In this type of contraction, the muscles elongates when generating force as a result the resistance is greater than the force generated. It can be voluntary or involuntary.
Isometric contractions: In this type of contraction, force is generated without changing the length of the muscle. It is seen most commonly in the muscles of the hands and the forearm which are involved in grip. They are used to maintain posture.
