The method of tree-ring dating gave the following years A.D. for an archaeological excavation site. Assume that the population of x values has an approximately normal distribution. 1,236 1,180 1,229 1,208 1,268 1,316 1,275 1,317 1,275 n USE SALT (a) Use a calculator with mean and standard deviation keys to find the sample mean year x and sample standard deviation s. (Round your answers to four decimal places.) x = A.D. S = yr (b) When finding an 90% confidence interval, what is the critical value for confidence level? (Give your answer to three decimal places.) tc = What is the maximal margin of error when finding a 90% confidence interval for the mean of all tree-ring dates from this archaeological site? (Round your answer to the nearest whole number.) E = Find a 90% confidence interval for the mean of all tree-ring dates from this archaeological site. (Round your answers to the nearest whole number.) lower limit A.D. upper limit A.D.
Continuous Probability Distributions
Probability distributions are of two types, which are continuous probability distributions and discrete probability distributions. A continuous probability distribution contains an infinite number of values. For example, if time is infinite: you could count from 0 to a trillion seconds, billion seconds, so on indefinitely. A discrete probability distribution consists of only a countable set of possible values.
Normal Distribution
Suppose we had to design a bathroom weighing scale, how would we decide what should be the range of the weighing machine? Would we take the highest recorded human weight in history and use that as the upper limit for our weighing scale? This may not be a great idea as the sensitivity of the scale would get reduced if the range is too large. At the same time, if we keep the upper limit too low, it may not be usable for a large percentage of the population!
