The harsh, blatant forms of prejudice present for most of U.S. history have become _____ recently

Expert Solution
Step 1

Prejudice refers to a social attitude of disapproval and suspicion against others based on their membership in a particular social group and social position. It consists of pre-conceived notions about different groups and communities. It often leads to the rise of irrational feelings of hatred and hostility in people's minds. Prejudice is usually based on a set of generalized facts that are often untrue.

Step 2

The USA is a multi-cultural and multi-racial country with a wide variety of ethnic groups co-existing here. The United States is historically known for racial inequality and discrimination. Discrimination based on educational facilities, medical facilities, housing facilities, and criminal justice rules was prevalent. There were hate-crimes and social inequality.

With the advent of modernity, concepts of fundamental rights, social equality, etc., emerged. The modern democratic system opposed social discrimination of any kind. Discriminating against people based on their race became illegal. Racially minor groups who once used to occupy the lowest social strata could attain social mobility and start blending more with the mainstream population. Even though the social situation is changing over-time, some discriminatory elements remain.
