The shogunate or the government of the shogun was the military dictatorship that ruled from 1192 to 1867 in Japan. Sakanoue Tamuramaro was the first to achieve the highest warrior rank, seii taishgun. This term was abbreviated was eventually applied to all shogunate leaders.
