The drug, erythropoietin (EPO) is an artificial version of a protein that is naturally produced by the kidneys. EPO is administered to individuals to increase their production of cells that carry oxygen in the blood. Two of the consecutive amino acids in the EPO protein are lysine and glutamic acid.
