Expert Solution
Step 1

Digestion is a process in which food, which are large molecules, is broken down into smaller soluble substances that the body can utilize for its metabolic functions. It is a process in which food is converted into nutrients within the body for various functions. The entire process begins involves a set of mechanical and chemical functions. Digestion is taken care by the digestive system. In humans, the organs that take part in digestion are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine. The liver, pancreas and gallbladder are also involved in the process.

Food is taken by the mouth and into the esophagus it travels after being chewed to the stomach where digestion continues. Digestion is said to have initiated during the process of chewing with the help of enzymes released by the salivary glands in the mouth. In the stomach, further digestion takes place as enzymes are released into this organ. As this chyme is being broken down more, the soluble substances get absorbed. This passes through the small intestine and the large intestine. Both of these organs to absorb essential substances and water. The waste is eliminated through the anus.
