Question
May I get help with this question? Scenario: Michelle Q. experienced a recent chest injury, and now her ventricular contractions pump less blood into her pulmonary arteries & aorta as they did during her days as an Olympian. The cardiologist tells her this will lower her cardiac output, but doesn't elaborate. Michelle is a curious sort and would like you to tell her why her cardiac output is going to decrease. You tell Michelle….
Blood is going to flow
back into her atria
Her heart rate is going
to decrease
She will undergo more
cardiac cycles per minute

Expert Solution
Step 1: Explaining the physiological functioning of the heart.

The heart consists of four chambers:

  • the upper right and left chambers are called right atrium and left atrium.
  • The lower right and left chambers are called right ventricle and left ventricle.

The deoxygenated blood is drained into the right atrium of heart which then drains the blood into right ventricle. The contraction of right ventricle pushes the blood into pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery carries blood to the lungs for oxygenation.

Oxygenated blood from the lungs is drained into left atrium. The left atrium drains blood into left ventricle. Contraction of left ventricle pushes the oxygenated blood into the aorta which then pumps the blood into arteries for circulation to different body parts.
