Case Project 4-4: The advantages of the Windows Server 2012 file system
GT Yummy Ice Cream has just hired a new person who is training to be a Windows Server administrator. She has worked with computers in many capacities, but has never managed a Windows Server 2012 server. You are asked to train her, and as part of the orientation to Windows Server 2012, you decide to explain the advantages of its file system.
a. Create a short report that summarizes the advantages you will discuss in your training.
Short report on the advantages of Windows server 2012:
The file system of Windows server 2012 called Resilient File System (ReFS), codenamed "Protogon", is a Microsoft proprietary file system which was introduced with Windows Server 2012 which aimed to revolutionise it's predecessor NTFS.
- ReFS
ReFS (Resilient File System) brings Windows Server 2012 into the future, with important capabilities such as support for large terabytes of data, and improved and automated healing. ReFS uses metadata to store information about files, and provides various features for auto correction and data verification.
Also, ReFS supports much larger volumes of data, which will be important with the rise of big data (a massive volume of data that is so large that it’s difficult to process using traditional database and software techniques)
- Storage Spaces integration - If parity space is used along with it, ReFS can repair detected corruptions using the alternate copy of the data provided by Storage Spaces. Repair processes are both localized to the area of corruption and performed online, without requiring and volume downtime.
-
Salvaging data - If a volume becomes corrupted and an alternate copy of the corrupted data doesn't exist, ReFS removes the corrupt data from the namespace. ReFS keeps the volume online while it handles most non-correctable corruptions, but there are rare cases that require ReFS to take the volume offline.
-
Proactive error correction - In addition to validating data before reads and writes, ReFS introduces a data integrity scanner, known as a scrubber. This scrubber periodically scans the volume, identifying latent corruptions and proactively triggering a repair of corrupt data.

Server Management
Windows Server 2012 supports GUI and non-GUI interfaces, and includes the same tiled interface of Windows 8 and Windows Phone. It’s very simple to use a tile as a dashboard widget, which means that companies have the ability to build a flexible, easy-to-use management dashboard that reflects the state of the data centre as well.
System administrators can get a single view of the server health, and they also have the ability to deploy new roles to an immediate or remove server, manage VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) clients, DAC (Discretionary access control), and storage and networking.
