Question

Suppose that grade point average of undergraduate students at one university has a bell shaped distribution with a mean of 2.61 and a standard deviation of 0.41 using the empirical rule what percentage of the students have a grade point average is that are between 1.38 and 3.84

Expert Solution
Step 1

Empirical Rule :

This rule is also called as 68-95-99.7 rule . Empirical rule states that for a normal distribution, almost all observed data will fall within three standard deviations ( σ) of the mean ( µ).

  • The Empirical Rule states that 68% of data observed following a normal distribution lies within 1 standard deviations of the mean.

                                                     μ±σ

  • 95% of data observed following a normal distribution lies within 2 standard deviations of the mean.

                                                     μ±2σ

  • 99.7% of data observed following a normal distribution lies within 2 standard deviations of the mean.

                                                    μ±3σ
