Streaklines are shown in Fig. for flow of water over the front portion of a blunt, axisymmetric cylinder aligned with the flow. Streaklines are generated by introducing air bubbles at evenly spaced points upstream of the field of view. Only the top half is shown since the flow is symmetric about the horizontal axis. Since the flow is steady, the streaklines are coincident with streamlines. Discuss how you can tell from the streamline pattern whether the flow speed in a particular region of the flow field is (relatively) large or small.

Question

Streaklines are shown in Fig. for flow of water over the front portion of a blunt, axisymmetric cylinder aligned with the flow. Streaklines are generated by introducing air bubbles at evenly spaced points upstream of the field of view. Only the top half is shown since the flow is symmetric about the horizontal axis. Since the flow is steady, the streaklines are coincident with streamlines. Discuss how you can tell from the streamline pattern whether the flow speed in a particular region of the flow field is (relatively) large or small.

Expert Solution
Step 1

For this problem it is assumed that the the flow is two dimensional, steady and the incompressible.

When the equally spaced streamline moved far apart from each other, it shows that the speed of the flow has been decreased in that part, If the streamlines are closer to each other, it means the speed of the flow has increased in that region.

In the given image the far up streams are parallel. so, the flow in the far upstream is uniform and straight. As the fluid approaches the front face of the cylinder, there are wide gaps between the streamlines. It indicates the deceleration of the fluid as it approaches to the front face of the cylinder.
