Expert Solution
Step 1

Given, A factory received a shipment of 10 flanges and 3 of them are defective.

Total number of flanges = 10

Defective flanges =3

Non-defective flanges = 7

Step 2

a) If a sample of 3 flanges is selected, the probability that all flanges are defective:

A sample of size 3 , from a population of 10 units can be drawn in 10C3  ways.

Now, to achieve the event "all 3 are defective" , The receiving foreman must select all 3 out of 3 defectives , which can be done in 3C3 = 1 way

Therefore, P(All in the sample are defective) = 3C3/10C= 1/120 = 0.008
