Sudden Infant Death Disorder is the sudden and unexplained passing of an newborn child beneath the age of one year (SIDS). Since the larger part of SIDS passings happens whereas the child is sleeping, the condition is also known as "crib death."
Most of the studies show that the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome can be mostly seen in very younger infants less than 4 months and mainly in newborn sleep on their stomach rather than sleep on their back.
While the newborn sleep by her belly can results in rebreathing, where the baby breaths his or her own exhaled air or as well and results in oxygen deprivation and increase levels of carbon dioxide from the rebreathe.
When newborns sleeping on their stomachs can occur the higher incidence of obstruction of the normal breaths due to the soft mattress compression around the face and can lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Sleep on the stomach or belly is suspected as one cause of SIDS.
