Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks are one of three major categories of rocks and formed from the cooling and solidification of
molten rock matter. Molten rock matters can be solidified at Earth's surface and created extrusive igneous
rock. When molten rock material is solidified beneath Earth's surface, it becomes intrusive igneous rock.
Igneous rocks can be identified by the determination of the composition and texture of the rock. The key to
igneous rock identification is first to determine whether the rock is either felsic (light) or mafic (dark) in
composition. Sometimes, rocks are intermediate between felsic and mafic. And, determine the texture of
the rock: pegmatitic (with very large crystal, 2 cm or larger), phaneritic (with visible crystal), aphanitic
(without visible crystals), porphyritic (with crystals of two different sizes), glassy, vesicular (with bubbly
appearance), and pyroclastic (with volcanic fragments). And, tuff is clastic and forms when ash and other
particles (tephra) are ejected from a volcano and solidify into rock.
Once these two characteristics have been identified, the igneous rock identification chart below can be used
to identify the rock name.
