Rigor mortis (the stiffening of muscles fibers several hours after death) is directly due to the depletion of what energy source? This energy molecule is used to power a calcium pump that transports Ca2+ ions back into the endoplasmic reticulum where calcium ions are already at a high concentration.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Rigor Mortis

  • It is one of the recognisable signs of death, caused by chemical changes in the muscles after death, causing the body to stiffen and locked in place, making it difficult to move or manipulate.
  • It commences after about 3 to 4 hours, reaches maximum stiffness after 12 hours, and gradually dissipates from approx 24 hours after death, thus lasting for about 72 hours.
