Logic and rationality are skills that are simply essential in the modern world. Through centuries of advancement, we as humans have evolved and expanded our understanding of the world around us greatly. Prior to science, religion was the main method of explaining things such as the creation and even day-to-day happenings. One of my biggest arguments against religion throughout my life has been the fact that it hinges on beliefs that simply cannot be proven and do not make logical sense. The thought of a god being in control of everything that happens has always seemed simply false to me due to my strong valuation of logic and reasoning. Studying Islam and other religions has taught me that while rationality is the most effective way to explain the world around us, it does have a limit. Some things can simply not be explained, often due to the fact that science or other educational fields have just not figured them out yet. However, humans naturally want answers to their questions despite a lack of knowledge. Religion is able to provide these answers for some in a completely subjective manner. This is one of numerous reasons why there are so many different religions with such vastly different beliefs. Islam itself is divided into Sunni and Shi’a based on variances in beliefs, with most Muslims following Sunni Islam. As I’ve mentioned, most of my knowledge of Islam has unfortunately come from the media. Luckily, I have always been open minded enough to know that the media is only placing emphasis on terrorism and simply ignoring the fact that the overwhelming majority of Muslims have absolutely nothing to do with terrorists. It is sad how the media portrays a religion that actually has incredible teachings and promotes a diverse lifestyle that employs a large amount of logic and reasoning. The reality is that anything can be weaponized, especially a system of beliefs, and there will always be people who are willing to do so. Islam does have this dark side to it, but the idea that this terrorism is promoted by teachings from the Qur’an is simply false. Terrorists themselves weaponize the holy book, and in turn, media outlets sometimes do the same. Islam encourages peace and most of all, community. As someone who has also done research in the fields of sociology and psychology, I know the value of having a supportive community. Studies have been conducted around the United States and even around the world comparing regions with similar types of people but with differences in the emphasis on community support. The regions and towns that have fully supportive communities always have higher levels of success and even higher life expectancies. Islam could teach the value of this to a lot of people, but the unfortunate reality is that most Americans are simply not going to study it but rather believe what the media publicizes about it. As I have learned over the past year, America is a country that could certainly use a boost in its sense of community. While Islam is obviously not for everyone as we all have vastly different beliefs, some of its teachings that emphasize community could be of great benefit to many of us.
