Researchers suspect that smoking disrupts sleep patterns, so the amounts of sleep smokers get may be different from the amounts non-smokers get. To determine if this is true they conduct a test of hypothesis. To collect the data they include questions on sleep patterns in the intake interviews of 86 smokers participating in a 30-day smoking cessation program the researchers are running. They find that the smokers in the sample sleep an average of 7.4 hours per day. In the population as a whole, it is known that the amount of sleep people get has a distribution that is roughly symmetric with an average of 7.7 hours and a standard deviation of 0.93 hours.

The probability value 0 indicates that there is no chance of that event occurring and the probability value 1 indicates that the event will occur. Sum of the probability value must be 1.
