World War 2 started with Poland's occupation by the German forces in September 1939, they were helped by the Soviets, and both sides agreed to share half of Poland's territories. Within a span of the next 12 months, Hitler and his ally Italy occupied many countries in Europe, including Denmark, Belgium, France, etc. The situation in Europe became very critical, and the only dominant power out of the Nazi's hands was Britain.
Germany was on its way to capturing the whole of Europe, and it was significantly supported by its allies Italy and Japan. They saw their expansion, Britain sort help of America, who officially entered the war after the pearl harbor incident in Dec 1941. With America's entry into the war, Europe gained the lost confidence and fought back vigorously against Hitler.
