In "Apology" Socrates claims that "the unexamined life is
not worth living." In order to understand why he would
say such a thing we need to know what he thought about
the purpose of human life, and how one could achieve or
fail to achieve that purpose. You will find some clues in
the Apology, the speech that Socrates gave at his trial for
corrupting the youth of Athens. And you will find more in
Crito -- a conversation Socrates has in his jail cell.
