Limiting reactants

Aqueous hydrobromic acid (HBr) will react with solid sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produce aqueous sodium bromide (NaBr) and liquid water (H2O). Suppose 29.9 g of hydrobromic acid is mixed with 19. g of sodium hydroxide. Calculate the minimum mass of hydrobromic acid that could be leftover by the chemical reaction. Solving for a reactant in solution

Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3), also known as sodium bicarbonate or "baking soda", can be used to relieve acid indigestion. Acid indigestion is the burning sensation you get in your stomach when it contains too much hydrochloric acid (HCl), which the stomach secretes to help digest food. Drinking a glass of water containing dissolved (NaHCO3) neutralizes excess (HCl) through this reaction:

HCl(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
The (CO2) gas produced is what makes you burp after drinking the solution. Suppose the fluid in the stomach of a man suffering from indigestion can be considered to be 250.mL of a 0.016 M (HCl) solution. What mass of (NaHCO3) would he need to ingest to neutralize this much
(HCl)? Round your answer to 2 significant digits.

Expert Solution
Answer to question 1

Reactants: hydrobromic acid and solid sodium hydroxide

Products: aqueous Sodium bromide and water

The reaction is as follows:

HBr (aq) + NaOH (aq)  NaBr (aq) + H2O (l)

A. Mass of hydrobromic acid reacting = 29.9 g

   Molar mass of hydrobromic  acid = 80.9 g mol-1

Number of moles of hydrobromic acid =mass of hydrobromic acidMolar mass of hydrobrominc acid

  Number of moles of hydrobromic acid = 29.9 g80.9 g mol-1 = 0.37 mol

Mass of sodium hydroxide = 19 g

Molar mass of sodium hydroxide = 40 g mol-1

Number of moles of sodium hydroxide = =mass of sodium hydroxideMolar mass of sodium hydroxide

Number of moles of sodium hydroxide = =19.0 g40.0 g mol-1 = 0.475 mol
