The 18th century in Britain is marked by a widespread Industrial Revolution. It transformed the agricultural societies into urban societies and paved the way for inventions like transcontinental railroads, electricity, and the cotton gin. The revolution accelerated the spread of industrial areas as numerous factories emerged and transformed smaller towns into major cities.
The distinguishing factor of this revolution is the creation of the industrial working class. The people in this class constituted an overwhelming majority of farmers. As the importance of agriculture diminished, the factory working class gradually rose. Prior to the revolution, there consisted only two classes, the wealthy sections of the population and the poor farmers. The industrial working class brought about by the revolution worked for wages in numerous factories that arose during this period.
