Nematocysts or cnidocytes are the specialized structures present in almost all members of Phylum Cnidaria. These are large organelles that originate from the Golgi apparatus. Nematocysts are dominatingly utilized for catching the prey, locomotion, and defense against other larger predators. Despite huge varieties in size and morphology, nematocysts share a typical form involving a barrel-shaped capsule with a string attached, that is long and hollow. Under normal circumstances, this string is wound inside the organelle and may often contain spine-like structures. Upon any chemical or physical stimulus, this thread-like structure is expelled out from the inside of the organelle and penetrates the predator, where it releases toxins, thereby killing it.
