• Identify the longest continuous carbon chain.

• Identify the substituent group attached to the carbon chain.

• In alkene: when priority groups are present on the same side of the double bond then it is Z configuration but when priority groups are present on the opposite side of the double bond then it is the E configuration.

• For alkene use suffix - ene and for alkyne use suffix- yne
