Step 1: IUPAC nomenclature rules for alkenes and alkynes
• Identify the longest continuous carbon chain.
• Identify the substituent group attached to the carbon chain.
• In alkene: when priority groups are present on the same side of the double bond then it is Z configuration but when priority groups are present on the opposite side of the double bond then it is the E configuration.
• For alkene use suffix - ene and for alkyne use suffix- yne
• Numbering of the carbon chain is done from the end nearest to the double Bond in alkenes and triple Bond in alkynes
• Designating the location of each substituent group by appropriate name and number in their alphabetical order followed by the parent name.
