Some important rules for IUPAC nomenclature :

Longest chain rule :- 

Select longest possible continuous carbon chain with maximum number of carbon atoms. This is called parent chain 

Lowest number rule :-

numbering of parent chain must be done in such a way that the carbon atom having substituent gets least number 

Order of priority to least number is 

Functional group > multiple bond > substituent

Alphabetical rule :-

If more than one substituent is present then they are named in alphabetical order
