Precipitation reaction is defined as a type of chemical reaction in which the two reactants exchange ions between themselves to form two new compounds, and one of the product formed is insoluble in aqueous solution and hence remains as precipitate (solid).
The precipitation reaction of CaCl2 and AgNO3 forms precipitate of AgCl and water soluble Ca(NO3)2. The reaction can be expressed as,
CaCl2 + AgNO3 -----> AgCl + Ca(NO3)2
In order to balance the above equation , we need to multiply AgNO3 by 2 and AgCl by 2. Thus, the balanced equation is-
CaCl2 + 2 AgNO3 -----> 2 AgCl + Ca(NO3)2
Molecular equation is a balanced chemical equation in which all the molecules and ions are expressed as neutral molecules using the molecular formula.
The total ionic equation is used to represent the molecular equation, wherein all the reactants and product that exist primarily as ions are represented as dissociated ions rather than as molecules in the aqueous solution.
The net ionic equation is used to represent only those species i.e. ions and molecules that participate in the reaction. The spectator ions that appears on both side of the reaction are cancelled out from total ionic equation in order to write the net ionic equation.
