A protein present in the erythrocytes that transports oxygen from the lungs to the cells and tissues and transports carbon dioxide from cells and tissues to the lungs is referred to as hemoglobin. Each hemoglobin consists of 4 heme or iron groups to which the oxygen binds. So each hemoglobin can carry 4 oxygen molecules.
Factors that affect the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen include:
