21st Century Skills - Persuasive Writing
When you persuade someone, you're trying to convince them to agree with your opinion. In
persuasive writing, you are doing exactly that. You write to support an opinion. You can find
persuasive writing in a position paper, an editorial, or even on a blog.
O
When preparing to write a persuasive piece, go through the following steps:
Step 1: Prewriting
Choose and narrow your topic
Keep your audience in mind
Gather evidence
Identify pros and cons (that support or oppose your view)
Step 2: Drafting
Write a strong thesis that makes your position loud and CLEAR
Compose an introduction to give your audience context
State any opposition to your topic
Use facts and details to build your case against the opposing point
Utilize logic/reason, credibility, and emotional appeal to persuade
your audience
Include a concluding statement
Step 3: Revising
Research to find more details to "fatten" your case
Add quotations if you did not do so already
Make sure your arguments are logical-that you have evidence for every
point you make
Step 4: Publishing/Presenting
Submit the essay: be sure to cite your sources
Include both, in-text citation and a works cited page, in your work
When presenting: make sure to use your voice's tone, volume, or speed
to help support your arguments
Use MLA citation format:
