![VIRTUE AS HABIT
Virtues are habits. That is, once they are
acquired, they become characteristic of a
person. For example, a person who has
developed the virtue of generosity is often
referred to as a generous person because he
or she tends to be
generous in all
circumstances. Moreover, a person who has
developed virtues will be naturally disposed
to act in ways that are consistent with moral
principles. The virtuous person is the ethical
person.
VIRTUE AS
HABIT
Aristotle believed that virtue as a habit requires an intentional
choice when you begin. The habit of virtue is not yet developed, but
over time one becomes used to behaving virtuously and after a while
one acts virtuously without needing to use volition.
It is commonly thought that virtues, according to Aristotle, are
habits and that the good life is a life of mindless routine. These
interpretations of Aristotle's ethics are the result of imprecise
translations from the ancient Greek text.
+ Aristotle's theory leaves a lot of questions unanswered (some of
those questions he addresses in other places). It doesn't tell you which
acts are virtuous or why, for example. As a guide to practical action,
however, conceiving of virtue as a habit is useful.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F437f398b-9511-469e-b43c-ec8f48929292%2F5067baaf-8593-4f3a-abc6-c2d1bef29729%2F7q9hs7_processed.jpeg&w=3840&q=75)

![VIRTUE AS HABIT
According to Aristotle, virtue is a habit:

"Ethics is not merely a theoretical study for Aristotle. Unlike
any intellectual capacity, virtues of character are dispositions
to act in certain ways in response to similar situations, the
habits of behaving in a certain way. Thus, good conduct arises
from habits that in turn can only be acquired by repeated
action and correction, making ethics an intensely practical
discipline."](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F437f398b-9511-469e-b43c-ec8f48929292%2F5067baaf-8593-4f3a-abc6-c2d1bef29729%2F5dg3yw_processed.jpeg&w=3840&q=75)
