The benefits of organic food Organic food has become a profitable industry in the past
decade. Consumers who purchase organic feel confident they are buying more natural food
without the health risks of genetically modified (GM) organisms. However, consumer perceptions
of organic food are not always accurate. For instance, the Food and Drug Administration has not
found organic food any healthier than non-organic. Additionally, many consumers mistakenly
assume organic food is completely pesticide-free. In reality, to be certified organic, any pesticides
used on the produce must be made from natural materials. Many farmers use organic pesticides
on their produce to protect from bugs and other pests. On the other hand, consumers should not
rule out the benefits of organic food. Supporters claim that although GM food is not considered to
have health risks, its relative newness makes it questionable. Organic food is also more
environmentally-friendly, and consumers might still believe organic pesticides derived from
natural sources are safer than synthetic pesticides
